DESCRIPTION: A greenish-brown species with each compressed frond reaching up to a maximum length of 2m and lacking midribs. The fronds are tough and leathery with large egg shaped bladders found at regular intervals along each one. The large air bladders take the plant towards the light for maximum photosynthesis. Knotted Wrack is also referred to as Egg Wrack and has a lifespan of up to 15 years. DISTRIBUTION: On rocky coasts around Britain. HABITAT: On sheltered rocky shores in the littoral zone where it can be the dominant species. BEST TIME TO SEE: All year round. |
